Admissions Beech

An American Beech tree (Fagus grandifoli) grew for at least 60 years in front of the Yale Admissions Building at 38 Hillhouse Avenue. It grew at the center of the lawn in the foreground of this picture.  The tree was removed in 2006 to facilitate the renovation of Luce Hall. The wood was collected exclusively from the stump which had undergone spalting.  The result is a richly figured grain with highly variable color that is randomly interspersed with black margin lines.    

All bowls from this wood source have been sold, but we still have enough wood for the pens shown below.
