Timothy Dwight College Ginkgo
These bowls and pens were handcrafted from a massive Ginkgo tree (Ginkgo biloba) that is at least 100 years old. The spectacular yellow foliage produced by this tree in the Fall has been a beloved fixture of the Timothy Dwight College quad for all of the College's history. This tree predates the College, which was built in 1935. Each Fall John Loge, the College Dean, gathers the entering freshman, and each Spring he regathers the graduating seniors around the tree. Fortunately, the tree still stands, but the strong winds of hurricane Sandy on October 29, 2012 sheared away its top branches. A video of the event was captured by one of the TD students and is viewable below.
The tree was trimmed and the wood was collected by Jeff Brenzel, the College Master, who provided it to us for the creation of this limited set of bowls and pens.
