Phelps Gate #86
This bowl was handcrafted from a 50-year-old American Elm tree (Ulmus americana) that once stood in front of Phelps Gate on Yale’s Old Campus. For five decades, first-year students passed beneath its boughs as they began their journey at Yale, and four years later, marched in full regalia under its branches at graduation. A namesake of the “Elm City,” this iconic tree succumbed to disease and was removed in September 2012. This small bowl is likely the final one to be crafted from its wood. This bowl is 6” in diameter and 2 1/2” high and is number #86
• Also includes a card describing the history of the tree’s location on campus.
